Policy advice and research - project examples

A selection of typical projects follows:

South East Food Group Partnership's PSFPI Strategy - assessment of public sector opportunities for local food producers in the South East including surveys of producer involvement and identification of barriers to entry. Study resulted in three pilot projects being developed to supply niche commodities to public sector organisations in the region.

Food, People and Place - an on-going project for the Coountryside Agency, to pilot in three locations a process to link conservation of the landscape with local food systems. Pilot communities at a parish level are developing action plans.

This included identifying potential suppliers in the London hinterland, reviewing menus and advising on contractual issues with regard to low volume direct supply contracts.

West Midlands: evaluation of local food initiatives – contract for Advantage West Midlands carried out with University of Warwick and Centre for Food Policy, City University. Research and stakeholder dialogue to evaluate the impact of LFIs on local health, community, environment and economy. This included the use of the five capital assets to assess impacts, including use of the LM3 local multiplier tool, which was then used to model impacts based on an inputs/outputs/outcome framework. Research included in-depth interviews with all relevant policy and funding organisations to assess the effectiveness of public sector support frameworks.

Yorkshire and Humberside Local Products Strategy and Action Plan – an action plan developed through the participation of the complete spectrum of interests in local food.

Promoting Local Food in Oxfordshire – a strategy and action plan supported by health, regeneration, farming and community organisations - developed from the farmers’ market network in the county.

Regional Branding Study for Taste of the West and SW Regional Development Agency – a survey of producers and processors to assess interest in regional branding and create the framework for the development of a new regional food and drink trade development organisation.

South East Farmers’ Market Study for the Countryside Agency – a review and evaluation jointly with Land Use Consultants including a survey of producers, consumers and market organisers to assess the contribution of markets to regional priorities.

Soil Association Food Futures programme – f3 consultants were involved in workshop design and facilitation for projects in Calderdale & Kirklees, Cumbria, Isle of Skye, Leicestershire and East London.

Local produce and village shops – a review of good practice in local sourcing by village shops, leading to guidance for the Vital Villages team of the Countryside Agency
